GLENCORE
With an annual turnover of 256 billions, Glencore is the largest company in Switzerland and the world's largest commodities trading and mining group. Its operational headquarters are located in Baar, Switzerland. According to The Guardian, Glencore is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, along with the Russian coal industry and the China National Petroleum Corporation.
Glencore has been accused of corruption in many countries where it operates and, unsurprisingly, appeared in the Paradise Papers. Milo Rau and his team investigated the irregularities in Glencore's business practices in two public Tribunals in Zurich (2020) and Kolwezi (2021): environmental pollution, corruption in the acquisition of mining licenses, evictions and violence on the group's concessions in Congo.
In December 2022, according to the BBC, Glencore declared the payment of 180 million dollars to the Democratic Republic of Congo due to allegations of corruption. Due to the failure of the referendum on the corporate responsibility initiative in 2020, Glencore continues to enjoy impunity in Switzerland for its financial, environmental and human rights crimes.
